During the first year of growth, mullein plants are low-growing rosettes of blue-gray green leaves with a velveteen texture, that range from 4-12 inches in length and 1-5 inches in width. Mature flowering plants are produced the second year, ranging from 5 to 10 feet in height, including the tall flowering stalk. Flowers between July and September.
In olden times, the dried seed stalks were dipped in tallow and used as torches/candles.
It is a powerful medicinal for the lungs and can be grown to use as part of a herbal smoking blend. It goes well with clary sage, cured homegrown tobacco leaves, wild rose petals, marshmallow root and broadleaf plantain.
